Possible failing ignition switch? Will the heater blower work when it fails to start with the key?

Not sure on sourcing.... but.... a fair few systems draw power from the same terminal that the starter relay does. (blower relay, for example. ) So, if that terminal ISN'T getting power, then, neither are some of the sensors that the failing systems depend on.

As a test, when the truck fails to start, check for power on pin 5 of the ignition switch connector. Should be 12 volts. (with ignition in Run position.)

Yeah. The key operates the ignition switch, gotta disassemble the steering column a bit to get to it.
