Default Trans Service Issues/Questions....

Hey Everyone!!!
I have a 99 ram 4x4 I bought it about 6 months ago and decieded to do a trans fluid/filter change and band adj. while I was at it. Ive never done it, but I've read many posts and have the manual and followed directions pretty good. So here are my questions.
1. Other than determining by what year the truck is, how can you be sure what trans is in it? I have the #'s off the case and also what was on the valve body. What tells you its a 46re???
2.When I drained fluid, over the course of the day, at least 6 quarts came out. The filter was in a housing and attatched to the valve body by 2 bolts, the 3rd offset one was under it screwed into the VB. My replacement I got was just an actual filter. Do I need one in the housing???
3. The front band adjustment went relatively smooth i thought, I want to 72in lb. than backed off about 2.5 turns, but the rear band was a royal PIA. The adjustment screw was a square head measuring 5/16 flat to flat. I had no 8pt socket so I ghetto styled a 5/16 socket to fit by grinding down one side, but im not sure if I got it to the correct 72in lb torque.....I backed it off 2 turns, and the 11/16 nut had hardly any clearance to tighten it correctly, but I did my best........
4. I bolted the pan back up with a new gasket (and drain plug I installed) Torqued bolts to 12ft lbs. Put 4 quarts atf+4 in and started her up. Put truck in neutral for a bit and let it warm up for about 10 min. Then shifted thru the gears, checked fluid and added another quart(up to 5 now) I tried to drive around my drive way and noticed it took a few seconds for the truck to engage into reverse. The same with drive, it takes a few seconds.....i didnt take truck out on road cause I didnt want to F anything up.......could the fluid still be low or not circulating thru trans yet?? Should I readjust bands and WHAT SHOULD I USE ON THAT SQUARE BOLD ON REAR BAND, 8PT SOCKET????

SORRY ABOUT WRITING WAR & PEACE, BUT THANKS FOR ANY HELP THATS OFFERED!!!!

you're probably still low on fluid. check with engine running, in NEUTRAL, not park, as the silly pump doesn't run in park. check fluid on the lowest side of the stick (top side) as it lays in the pan at a funny angle. my 01 takes 6 quarts to refill without the extra filter and cooler, 7 with.

Aren't band adjustments 2 and 7/8ths turns out?

If you have a V-8 in your truck, the only trans that came in them was the 46RE.

Wasn't there some 46RH's in the early years (94, 95).

I missed that he said it was a 99, even though he wrote "I have a 99".

listen to these folks man.. they won't steer you wrong..

the original poster was given some information elsewhere that could do him some financial harm, and from what appears to be a board elder..

OP- you made a good choice coming here.. you also got responses from a portion of the most knowledgeable posters on here..

Hey guys!
So I decieded to start from scratch cause I wasnt sure about the rear band adjustment.(luckily I installed the drain plug) I went and got a new filter (the one in the black plastic housing with the 2 mounting holes) Also bought an 8pt 5/16 socket for my in. lb. torque wrench. This is the only socket that fits the rear band adj. screw!!! Retourqued it to 72in/lbs then backed it off 2 turns as per manual. For ****s and giggles I did the front band 72 then backed it off as close to 2 7/8 as possible, added 5 quarts of atf +4 Started her up, let her warm up for a bit in NEUTRAL, rechecked fluid level and like magic things were back to normal!!!!!! Thanks for all the input and suggestions guys!!!
