I just did the 4.88s in my ram. Used premium motive gears in the front and usa gears in the rear.(whick I believe is also a branch of motive). Bought the kit to do it on ebay. If you have the stock gears now you need the other carrier 3.92 and larger as stated. With the new carrier from randys and the motive gears in the front there is no shaving of teeth required. The new carrier from randys on ebay was like 70bucks. in the 9.25 rear with the thick usa gear I have. It required what was referd to a "notched cross pin" to clear the ring gear. Shaving the teeth was not reccomended. its basicly the stock pin with a .150 flat on the one side to clear the ring gear.. I also noticed you said this was the first time you were doing it. not to offend you, but if you don't have access to the proper tools to do the job. I highly reccomend you have someone do it for you. It's not as straight forward as you may think. You need most of the specialty tools to do the job right. I am a tool and die maker, and made most of the stuff needed to do the job. I have a lot of time tied up in making seal and race install tools as well as bearing pullers for the axles etc. My trucks been down 3 weeks now. will finally be finished tomorrow. granted I waited about a week for new spider gears and trac-lok posi cluthches. Just didn't want you to be surprised once you start on it..Good luck.

And as another bit of info for you. you will need a 3/4 inch drive or larger breaker bar to tighten the rear pinion nut enough to crush the crush sleeve. I broke my 1/2 drive breaker bar today trying to get enough force to crush it.

I think youve got the d44 and chrysler 9.25 carriers mixed up. There's only one carrier for the chrysler 9.25. The d44 has the carrier split at 3.92 requiring the thick gearset for all below 3.92 to run the 3.55 carrier in our trucks.

Wander how he liked them considering this thread is a few years old.

I'm going 4.56s with mine. Ordering the Yukon gear sets with the overhaul kits.

When I did my 4.56 several years back, Yukon didn't make a 4.56 for the 9.25. Maybe they do now, but at that time they didn't So I had a Ykon in the front (thick gear) and a Motive in that back. They were awesome gears for 35's.

Yeah they do now. I priced them kits and the major overhaul kits around a grand for everything. But i'll be getting 35s alittle before so I can feel the difference.

How much of a difference did you have?

Night and day. With 35's and 4.10's, even a small hill would cause the trans to downshift just to have enough power. Even a headwind would keep the truck out of overdrive as it struggled to maintain. After the gears, all that was gone and it had plenty of power.
