4.88 Gears - New Carrier?
4.88 Gears - New Carrier?
Ive Got 35 inch tires with an auto (48RE) tranny. On high way if my tranny could talk it would cuss me out. Its got a lot of stress on it being stock gears. I am postive on getting 4.88s BUT for the front end do I need a new carrier, ive researched but cant get an exact yes or no answer with my ratio I want. I know there is thick gears but ive already got my gears and the bearing and what not rebuild kit.. So just wondering on carrier advice and where a good place to get one is. Thanks much appreciated. Need to do this before it gets hot again outside before tranny goes nam on me (blow up)

Did you tell them what you currently have?
I just did mine in 4.88 - no carrier necessary.
On the front - if you have thick gear you need to shave one of the teeth on the ring to fit the cross pin. If not then you'll need to change the carrier and no need of shaving ring teeth.
On the back 4.88 for Chrysler 9.25 is made only(?) by Yukon (YG C9.25-4.88) - no need to change carriers.

So if shaving one of the teeth means you can use a thick 4.88 with no carrier change, i'd still recommend a new carrier.
My original response assumes the OP has 3.55 gears. If you have 3.92, 4.10, or even 4.56 now, and they are not thick gears, then you don't need a new carrier because one was likely already installed (the carrier break is 3.92 or larger I believe). If you have factory 3.55, then you really should get a new carrier for 4.88's.

The OP could also sell the gears he has and purchase the thick gears. Might be cheaper that way instead of getting a new carrier. Depending of course on how much he can sell them for.
