Instead of a K&N system you could also go for Volants. Its honestly one of the most true "CAI" out there because the filter is enclosed and brings in cold air from where the stock intake did. But thats about $265 compared to $70 for the 14X3.. But the Volant will last longer if you off road.

The K&N i was going to install was going to be the factory replacement, the CAI never even crossed my mind until now. The truck will see 30% off road and 70% on road, i'd like something i can not worry about too much and still get good results with. I'm guessing either will be way better than stock right?

if I'm not mistaken, the butterflies on stock trucks are 50mm..
the TB narrows from 50mm at the flies, to 46mm in the throat..
a dremmel, and a lot of patience with a good grinding wheel can take it to 50mm by simply grinding out the shoulder, leaving it a true cylinder.. then you would want to eliminate the horns on the top, which promotes better flow.. that's pretty much it..
if 50mm is your aim, that is possible with a grinder alone. If you go to 52mm, you're going to need bigger butterflies.
