Trans rebuild is going to run 1500 to a couple thousand. Can you do any of the work yourself?

People keep saying 1500, I've been getting quotes 2600-2900 for a rebuild. Bought my truck for 3300 that doesnt need a rebuild (but did need some other minor work). If you can rebuild it yourself its probably a good bet- if you have to get someone else to rebuild it, go price it out a bit. The other negative is you can't test drive to to make sure thats the only thing wrong with it... after all, another $750 for the plenum seal replacement... Valve seals tend to be bad on these things... UJoints don't last forever.... Your 1100 dollar bargain could EASILY be $5500, and you should be able to find one in good condition around $4000-5000 - but seriously take a moment and price it out.... maybe you can find someone who will do it for 1500, and maybe you know the guy who owns it so you know thats all thats wrong with it... and you also know it has a hughes plenum plate... then hell it's a good deal, can't complain at $2500-2600 for truck with a rebuilt tranny!

For that kind of money on the transmission, you could get a stage III Mega Viper.... Far superior to anything local rebuilders would do.

I wholeheartedly concur. The same money ($2600 to $2900) would land a (twice) dyno tested Mega Viper at your door. Mine was a tad more than that because I upgraded to the billet converter, deep pan, etc. but so far I'm convinced that it was worth every penny.

I wouldnt pay 1100 with bad tranny. I paid $1500 for my 96 with 150,000 and it ran.
Friend of mine just had tranny replaced in her 95 1500. $1500 installed 3yrs/75000 mile warranty.
