Default My truck is rusting from the inside out, and exhaust question!

So I went to take the headliner out of my truck on friday and found something I was not expecting to find when I got it out. The whole inside of my truck is rusted. I checked every inch of the roof and didnt find any holes from previous cab lights or anything, and the rust is above the windows so I dont believe that the windows would be leaking. Im guessing the cab on this truck must of been sitting out side at one point with no windows in it because I dont know how else this would happen. Im also very scared but should check to see how the floor boards are.

So after I found this I decided just to take a damn close look at everything on the truck and I found that the Y pipe after the manifolds wear it goes under the oil pan to the passenger side of the truck is all dented and cracked and was attempted to be welded back together. I was planning on getting a magna flow cat this spring anyways so now I want to replace the Y pipe with the pacesetter offroad on from jegs. Do I just save up the money and get headers right away as long as im getting this involved with the exhaust? Also how hard is it to do headers myself. I'd be kindah worried that I'd break a bolt off and be screwed. Anyhelp or insight on both questions would be great. Thanks

I have no idea why your truck would be rusting like that.... that's just.... odd.... Might be getting some water intrusion around the Third brake light, but, that really wouldn't explain the rust in front...... Do what ya gotta to get rid of the rust, then hit it with some POR15, or something similar. Doesn't matter if its ugly, you are going to hide it anyway.

According to popular theory, the Off Road Y pipe will work with the stock manifolds. That said... it might be easier to do it all at once. Keep in mind, the O/R Y-pipe has NO provision for a cat, so, you will need to get a single in/whatever out, that you can put on there.

Yeah I was definatley stumped when I saw this under my headliner. I was thinking bout just cutting out the big spots of rust sanding the other and covering with some herculiner I have sitting around. What is that POR15 that your talking about?

Yeah I'd really love to do the headers y pipe and cat all at once but now that I got looking into prices I dont think thats gonna happen till summer if it does happen. Seeing as how I dont know if I'd trust myself installing all the the correct way. Probably end up taking it somewhere to get it done

Did you buy the truck used?

Do you know where the place or person you bought it from got it?

If you don't know, have you ever ran a car fax on your truck.

That"s some pretty severe internal rust...not something that I'd consider ordinary even for the miidwest.

yes I did buy the truck used. I still have the guys name and address I've been thinking of giving him a call. I've also debated getting a car fax but whats the point now? I already bought the truck and stuck with it why spend the money on a car fax now when I could just spend it on the truck. I did learn when I registered the truck thats it has a salvage title.

I'm thinking it spent some time in the bottom of a lake...Hence the salvage title.

POR-15 is a coating that you use to fix rust, thats why its called POR - Paint Over Rust. People swear by it, and it works really good.

thanks purp that could be another thing. I never thought of it being dropped in a lake. Thats a pretty common thing that stupid people do around here when the lakes freeze over for winter. And I'm guessing that POR-15 is available at the local autoparts store?

I have no idea if you can get it at an auto parts store. I've never seen it at my local Advance, AutoZone, or NAPA. You can order it from the POR-15 site and Summit Racing.

I wonder if the truck came from New Orleans...after Katrina. It looks like damage you see in vehicles that have been exposed to salt air or water like along the coasts. They tend to rust from the top down....

This folks is why you should never buy a vehicle with salvage or rebuilder title unless you are doing the rebuilding and plan on never selling it.
If the truck has been totaled due to flooding theres one other nightmare you can expect which is wiring issues.
POR-15 works ok but if you can't coat the top of the inner roof where it is really rusting the metal will just desintegrate and leave the POR-15
