Default A/C Recharging

I have a 1998 Ram 2500 5.9 and the A/C is not working. I think it just low on refrigerant and Im thinking of recharging it. I did a search but I'm a little confused on which line to add the refrigerant to. Do you add it to the high line or the low line. In other posts people have added it to the high line and my manual says only add it to the low line. Which one do i add it to? Thanks

Add it to the low side line if you add it to the high side you run the risk of blowing up the can. Just make sure you add while the engine is running with the AC on.

Cant believe winter is already over lol

Just charged it. It is blowing cold air now but not as cold as I would like it to. Oh well its not a new truck anymore i guess! I just hope it holds the charge. I had to have some a/c bag in the dashboard replaced that was leaking refrigement about 5 years ago and that cost about $800 back then! Thanks guys!

Is it even possible to get a a/c system blowing as cold as it was when the vehicle was brand new without replacing the whole system? every vehicle i've ever owned did not blow the air as cold as it did.

Evacuate the system, replace the receiver/dry, evacuate the system again, recharge.

With a vacuum pump, designed specifically for that purpose. You could prolly take it to a shop that has the right machine, have them recover the refrigerant, then you change the r/d, take it back to the shop to have it evacuated, then you recharge it.

I would make darn sure the system doesn't have any leaks before spending the money though. Evaporator cores on these seem to have some issues there.... (and are fun to change to boot....)

Besides the evac like HeyYou said, without the proper gauges/equip. you most likely don't have the correct pressure and correct amount of 134a in the system. And also, the stuff doesn't just disappear, so there must be a small leak somewhere.
