As far as 14x3 vs CAI, Ive had the same CAI on my last 3 trucks, polished aluminum tubing with 3" cone filter, and "heat shield".. Sound was the only real noticeable difference between that and stock.. The "heat shield is really just a selling tool IMO. You are pulling a slightly larger volume of air at one time with the cone filter, however that air is not COLD, its the warm air from the engine bay. The stock setup may pull less volume, but since it originates from the fender, i think it would be cooler that the CAI setup. With that in mind, the 14x3 is MUCH cheaper than even an EBAY CAI and will probably have the same performance effect, which is going to be sleight.. Out of the CAI setup i had i MAYBE got an extra 1 mpg hwy, which was offset by the poorer MPG in town due to the hot air from the engine bay. Now the Volant may be a good product, haven't tried... Really wanna try this though..

Any thoughts??

yea those dual ram air box's that would be sick! and i was just thinkin cuz i love the look of the 14x3 now, and it would be so much easier than havin to take off the damn cai everytime. but i know that its pullin straight warm air with the 14x3 but the cai might be somewhat cooler. so im puzzled, and if i did get a 14x3 now i have a cai, that i dont use....

The various CAI system at least give a nod toward drawing 'cooler' air from the fender area. Granted, that space draws IT'S air from the front of the engine compartment.... When you are moving down the road at a fairly good clip, it probably makes a difference, but, if you are crawlin' down the trails, nope. Seriously doubt it.

One advantage that they DO have over stock though, they Flow better.... which is what you want. The 14X3 sitting on top of the motor probably flows even better, but, you are getting high temp air right off the top of the motor.... so, any gains you might see from better flow, are probably negated by the air temp.

Agreed, but i think the sleight benefit from a K&N or other CAI is greatly outweighed by their cost.

On that, I will wholeheartedly concur.
