You have to have the shifter in park and the steering wheel unlocked to pull the key out, is that what you are meaning?

Remove the three screws on the bottom of the knee bolster (the large plastic piece where your knees are under the steering wheel and pop it off. You will see a white tube with a copper colored wire attached to the steering column. There will be a thumbscrew on it, mess with it see where it gets you.

Adjust your shift linkage.

BLOCK YOUR WHEELS. Put the shifter in what it thinks is neutral. Crawl under the truck, and loosen whatever holds the linkage in place for adjustment. (I haven't had to deal with this yet, so, not sure what all it looks like, on the chevys i have done, is was a nut you loosing up a bit, so you could slide a shaft in/out of a pivot...)

Make sure the trans shift linkage is in the center of the detent for neutral. Crawl back out, and put the shifter in the notch for neutral. Crawl back under, tighten whatever you loosened.

There is also a way to adjust the little orange indicator so IT is in the right place, think there is a DIY in the faq section for that.

Replace any worn bushings you find while crawling around down there too.....

I had this very problem about 2 months back. Does the trans still shift good? I hope for your sake it's just an adjustment, mine was the trans the 2nd gear band strut or something broke and fell on the shift selector in the trans. If you crawl under the truck and look at the linkage you'll see the adjuster.

The indicator has an adjusting screw up behind the knee panel. I think the shifter mechanism is just plain worn out, so I don't think it will make any difference.

the guy I bought it from said it started to do it after he had the tranny rebuilt so ill check the shift linkage in the morning. it shifts fine. does the selector in the dash control the key release or would the linkage effect that?

The shift lever in the column itself has a mechanism that interacts with the ignition switch. Pull the covers off and see what is worn.
