Default Plenum Gasket?

I just took the intake off my truck. The whole under side of the intake is covered in sludge oil...The center of the block, under the intake is nasty oily too...Is this the cause of a Plenum gasket gone badd?

Nope that's not from a bad plenum. Take that pan off the bottom of the intake, if it looks like that inside the intake then you know the plenum was bad.

That's a nasty looking lifter gallery. Either someone didn't change the oil regularly, or they were running oil that contains parafin (eg Penzoil) which tends to cook and leave deposits like that when run for too long.

Drop the oil pan, and see if you can't clean some of that sludge out of there. Was that a bent connecting rod, or pushrod you were playin' with?

Honestly, i've seen a lot worse ones posted on here. That one doesn't look terrible. There was a thread on here not long back where someone claimed that is caused by using synthetic oil. I don't beleive that though. I have used nothing but synthetic in my truck, and when I took off my intake to do my plenum, I had no sludge of buildup.
