I was under the hood today and I checked the PCV valve but there was oil coming from the top of the valve and going into the hose. Is that normal or should I replace it? 98 5.9 V8 4x4
The PCV valve should only let gasses through the tube, no oil. Replace it.
Also, DO NOT get one from an auto parts store. For our trucks, the only ones they have are generics that do not work properly. Its less than $10 at a dealership last time I grabbed one, get it there.
Why is the PCV valve from AutoZone not good, just curious. I will go to dealership to pick up new valve tommorow. Here is a picture of the valve so youg et an idea of what I'm talking about.
The crappy Fram ones sold at AutoZone are not that high quality. The Fram one I pulled off had a very crappy plastic valve in it. The Mopar one I replaced it with had a precise steel valve in it. I dont know anything about PCV valves, but the Mopar one just seems better. Plus its made in the USA.
Well I replaced the valve, bought at the dealership for $6 and now my engine idles at a higher RPM, my old valve still worked but it was very dirty and clogged up a little. Guess my engine is thanking me now that it can breathe easier haha.
The aftermarket valves tend to have too high of a flow rate than what the manufacturer calls for, so, you also get oil along with combustion gases sucked thru there. If the valve is crappy enough, you can also get excessive oil consumption as well.
