Hello DF
I am the proud owner of a 1996 Dodge 2500 V10 4X4 super cab! I paid $1200.00 dollars for this truck because it has no reverse. I found a rebuild kit for a couple hundred and should have it on the road soon. In forward gears its slips between 1st and 2nd and sometimes wont go into 3rd. Anyone ever had these problems and can make some suggestions as to what kind of improvements I can make to prevent these things from happening again. The previous owner put three transmissions in this truck and a new motor the motor has 80,000 miles on it and the tranny has about 10,000 after the rebuild. So I am thinking there must be something else causing the transmission to fail. Thanks

congrats, these trucks are just known for having EPIC FAIL tranny's. there are things you can do to it to help it out, like an tans cooler and a remote filter. also you can do a check valve delete or something, i have seen it on here. i suck at tranny stuff so someone else can tell you better or you can search up above. and you can also make sure the bands are adjusted correctly, new filter and fluid filled to the correct level and should be like a new tranny.

The 47/48 R? trannies were actually much better than their 46 brethren. A lot depends on what was done in the previous rebuilds, and what was replaced..... You can get all sorts of super beefy parts for them..... In the FAQ section, is MonteC's Transmission corner. (long thread....) read thru that to get some interesting Ideas. On about page six, he has a list of parts recommended for a member that regularly towed 7000 pounds with his truck, he had a 46RE, but, the same concepts would apply to yours as well.
What I would recommend would be sonnax sure cure, (basically, its a shift kit....) A GOOD quality torque converter, extra clutches and steels, deep pan, with a drain plug..... additional Aux Cooler, external filter, and get rid of the factory check valve.
