I got a 99 ram 1500 with a 5.9 an I jus got the exhaust done an now the insides of the exhaust Is black one of my friends said it was running to rich how do I fix it?
Need to fix that then. PCM bases a LOT of its calcs on engine temp. If it is getting a wrong reading..... you get wrong results.
+1... If the PCM is disregarding info from the ECT (as it would if reference voltage were too high) then it defers to set tables.... kind of a "limp in, shtty gas milage mode"
Regardless... exhaust pipes are always going to look black inside; if this was your friend's only basis for the assumption that you're running rich, he doesn't know what he's talking about.
