Default When is the TC supposed to lockup?

Right now it locks up just after it shifts into third. I think that is the biggest thing making the truck feel like a turd right now.
Service manual says "torque converter locks in 2nd/3rd-check solenoid/wiring, etc." so is it not supposed to lock until 4th?
What is the most likely cause. solenoid?

TCC will engage in third gear. (most certainly if you have overdrive disabled, maybe if you don't....) Mine doesn't generally engage until 4th. Things may have changed in five years though.

Top Ten signs of a bad torque converter:

#10 - It's found between an engine and transmisison which have the words "Daimler" or "Chrysler" cast in them somewhere;

#9 - Doesn't claim "Additional Oil" on Form 1299 with its tax return;

#8 - Your torque converter has been "balooned" more than Dick Cheney's arteries;

#7 - When you're not looking, it crawls off the flexplate and takes twenty minute paid "breaks" on the input shaft;

#6 - You wake up in the morning and find your torque converter sleeping with your neighbor's wife;

#5 - The lockup clutch has more "slop" than Madonna;

#4 - Your torque converter has been off on an Extacy binge for six days straight;

#3 - The hookers in Times Square tell you "We would, but we don't want to get caught with someone with a torque converter like yours.";

#2 - Sneaks out at night and holds up convenience stores for all the ATF they have on hand;

The Number 1 reason your torque converter is bad - Your torque converter has appeared twice on "America's Most Wanted".

When I have O/D on, it will only engage in 4th @ about 50-55 depending on how far my foot is into it.

O/D off, it engages in 3rd at around 35-40 depending on my foot.

Are you saying that you don't have 4th gear, or that it locks in 3rd and 4th?

you'll know when it locks, the rpms fluctuate about 200-400 rpms, its kinda like another gear almost.

and with mine with O/D off it does it at around 45 mph
and with o/d on, it will do it in o/d (4th) at around 60-65 mph

how much of an incline? going to higher elevations can alter the air fuel ratio, and cause it to be sluggish....

My dad had a 96 5.2, and he hauled a 32 ft. camper with it. we would go way up north in maine, and going up some of the inclines, it would get sluggish and throw a CEL...when we got down the other side, all was normal again and CEL would go off.....

I never pull anything with my truck, ive never got anything to be pulled. But nothin like a mountain or vertical climb, its just a mild hill, not steep and not like a speed bumb.
