I am a new owner of a 96 Ram 2500, it has an auto transmission and it will not shift into first gear from the drive position. The trans. starts in 2nd, however, if I place the lever in first, second, drive it shifts properly. I have been told that it is the trans. control solenoid, hi/low pressure switch, and an inhibitor. I am not sure if these are the same part or not. Anyone know what this may be and if so where it is located? Also, sometimes it will not shift into OD unless I let off the accelerator. The RPM's surge until I let off of the pedal.

Might be a failing governor pressure sensor...... not completely sure. Might not hurt to drop the pan, change fluid and filter, adjust bands, and while you are in there, have a look at the governor pressure solenoid.... they tend to gunk up, and not work very well. There is no visual inspection for the pressure sensor, aside from if it is obviously broken.

I agree with heyyou, you should have a code if not one should pop up soon, can be debri causing problems or the actual sensor and solenoid, bout a $300 fix done somewhere or $150 bucks in parts

I have been told that if the regular fluid changes have not been met on a tranny that flushing the system and refilling with new fluid will ruin the tranny. Something about shavings that occur create a friction that the tranny is used to. What do you think?
