Talking Thinking about a little overhaul...

So I have some bad valve stem seals in my heads. So I figured while I have the heads off, why not send them in to get cleaned and checked for cracks or warping issues. From what I've heard, the heads on the 5.9s are notorious for being cracked. So if that's the case, I was thinking of getting new heads and possibly a slightly bigger cam. I've searched the forums, and people say to get the heads from Clearwater. But I have little experience with heads and cams, so if I could get some advice on what to get/expect that would be awesome. I have a bunch of great mechanic friends who would do the work for me, but I need to get parts for them to put on. I would love for my truck to have a lot more get up and go, but as most people I'll be on a budget. In about a month or two, I should have around 1500 to buy everything in one bundle.

So if anyone knows a good combo site where I can get a nicer cam and heads, please let me know!

Changing cams is kinda tricky. You can't do much of an upgrade without also getting a custom tune, so the engine will run right. From HemiFever, custom tunes run about 365.00, but, in order to do it correctly, you will also need a wideband O2 sensor. another 2-300 bucks.

Also, if you are going to pull the heads, I wouldn't even bother with having them checked. Just replace 'em. You can get better than stock replacements (thicker deck, same size valves) for around 270 each. Or, you could upgrade to larger valve heads, for around 4-500 each. Instead of a cam, go with the Harland Sharp Roller Rockers. (1.7 ratio.) Gives a bit more lift, and longer duration at .050. (effectively a cam change that is computer friendly.) Might consider the Hughes Air Gap intake manifold as well.

Yeah, a friend suggested a cam, but I've never changed a cam in any of my vehicles before. I was going to get the tuner from HEMIFEVER anyway but will I still be able to get the $275 one with the new heads and HSrr's?

If everyone used that rule, no engines would ever leave the factory!

Well I've never done a cam, but like I said I have some good mechanics friends who have changed cams in their own personal vehicles. And for money's sake I was probably just going to mod the kegger for now, the Airgap would be nice once I get some more money scrouged up. After the heads, my next project will be some 4.56's for my 34's...

I've decided to get these heads...

For what I'm looking for, I'm pretty sure those will be good... Anybody have opinions on these heads? Or does anybody have these heads? Thanks!

If you have the money, I'd get these:

Hughes does good stuff. Never heard of that brand on E-Bay....

Well the brand on ebay is Clearwater... A lot of people that I've seen on here have them and recommend them. I have looked at the Hughes ones but the Clearwater ones are the same thing for a little less.
