any tranny shop should be able to beef it up for you.

Keep in mind, trans upgrades aren't cheap. You are looking at 1200-1600 JUST for a stock rebuild. Meaner parts means more money.

if you're talking about taking an extra tranny to a shop- meaning, they don't have to pull it and put it back- you can save some dough..

I've a local guy here who says he'll rebuild to OE for $500- IF, I deliver the tranny and pick it up.. I can toss some better parts at him, and he say's he'll make it right.. dunno..

I mention this because the way I read the first post, you're talking about having them build a transfer case and tranny OFF the truck, and staging it until you're ready to bolt it up- which I'm assuming will be after yours gives up the ghost.. that's not a bad plan.. you can pick up a core from a boneyard (around here anyway) for about two bills.. You may be able to get that out of your existing tranny after the fact if you're lucky.

The most important question is: How much do you have to spend?

If you can afford and justify it, just get a PATC Mega Viper with a billet torque converter. It comes in a crate, ready to install, with no screwing around with local shops that might or might not know a lot about building the 46RE.

Keep in mind, though, that if you just buy a transmission just to keep on hand, and no matter where you get it, the time on the warranty is going to tick down while the thing's just sitting there. If it sits too long, you'll have to worry about corrosion forming, clutches drying out and sticking, pistons glued in their bores as the ATF drains away, and so on. A fresh (re-) build is always better because everything's corrosion free and freshly lubed when you install the unit.

The NP231 is a pretty good transfer case if you replace the tail shaft snap ring with a Transfer Case Saver. Unless you intend to really stress the thing with hard core off-roading or monster power, I wouldn't worry about upgrading to a different unit.

when it comes to the trasfer i wouldnt be scared. I offroaded mine stock 231D, sled pulled, tug a truck, hell pulled fully loaded semi 80,000lb truck down the road. No issues with it. I just finaly got a hair line crack in the rear case because i droped it taking it out of the truck. what i would do is put a new chain and seals in it and at most bearings chanin and seals. They are pretty tough from the factory.
