Default help needed 911 fast!

it has been quite awhile since ive been on here but im completly stumped this time.
It all started wednesday morning, i hooked my truck up to my car trailer with my 74 duster on it, took off down the road and it started sputtering and missing real bad, i stopped about 2-3 miles down the road and let it warm up some more, did that and it ran great the rest of the day, pulled back in my shop at around 3-3:30 let it sit till about 5 and it wouldnt start.
Ive read that the crank sensors are a real joy to get to to i figured that was the culprit seeings that seemed to fit the symptoms, changed that nothing, talked to my uncle (a mechanic for chrysler since the k cars) he said it was the (i cant remember what its called) but the pick up in the distributor, changed that, nothing, i stole a ASD relay out of a buddies truck to see if that was it, still nothing im stumped

What the vitals are
Fuel pressure is around 42-45 psi on both rails
Coil is getting a constant 12v for 3-4 seconds when the key is on
changed a few vaccume lines (not that that would cause anything)
checked and double checked everything

the everything is working but the coil is not getting the signal to fire just the constant 12v, whats wrong with my truck?!

im used to working on internationals and old mopars so this new stuff is like reading the chinese phone book

If your coils not getting the signal, maybe it's the coil pigtail harness. I'm just shooting at the moon here, but my truck did the same thing and it ended up being a short in the harness wiring.

Is your coil yellow? If so, take it off and throw it far far away..

you're 'sposed to get that 3-5second constant at turn key, and it's 'sposed to stop if'n the engine isn't turned over.. so you're good up to that point..

sounds like the lack of fire.. and in the way a bad ignition coil would die.. I had an accel, and I promise to anyone reading this again- I am DONE with accel for every product they mimic, from now on.. even if it's not an accel, it still sounds like a bad ignition coil.

MSD ain't what MSD used to be when they made a name for themselves.. I've heard the same of late..

the OE coil is hard to beat, honestly.

AND- if he has an AM coil such as Accel or MSD, they often need adapters to work, and THOSE go bad too just as you suggested in your original post.

The coil is a new mopar unit i put on a few months ago, i was looking at accel and what not but those adapters scared me, if a company cant make a part to fit you exact application im not going to waste me time or cash, now isnt the black wire suppost to have a signal to the coil to fire? i stick a test light in it and it might work but usually nothing happens, just the 12v on the hot side, i just pulled everything apart and rechecked everything again and still nothing, what i dont get is that it just ran fine about 2 hours before it died

The PCM fires the coil by removing the ground for the coil. (the black wire) So, under normal circumstances (key off), you will see infinite resistance from that pin, to ground. If that wire is shorted to ground, the truck will never start. (no spark)

Grab a spare spark plug, and unplug the coil wire from the distributor, stuff the plug into it, and make sure is has a good ground somewhere. (do NOT hold it in place with your hand..... or a metal tool... bad idea...... bad.) Crank the engine, and see if you get spark.

alright ill try that in the morning, if no spark bad coil then? is there a way to check the ground? like could i put a test light on the positive side of the battery stick the probe in the black wire and see if it flashes?
that would explain why it sputtered real bad wed morning if the coil is bad

I have the MSD coil. WOrks fine for now. I had a hypertech coil and that worked great. but it was a stock coil that was either refilled or just had the stock part number grinded off (there was a mark!!!).

You can get a hypertech coil from autozone. They will order it for you for 69 dollars.

And about the adapters...I just spliced in the connector from a model year that matched the coil!!! Pulled it from a junkyard piece. Bad thing is that i ruined a 200 dollar wiring harness doing that. THat engine wiring harness sitting in that dodge junkyard is now worthless because I took that pigtail.
