Default How to find #1 tdc compression

I believe I installed my cam wrong. I think I set it #1 TDC exhaust and thats why I dont get compression. How do I find #1 TDC compression with the timing chain off?

stick a pencil into the number one spark plug hole, turn the crank till the pencil starts to move a little bit, then, hold the pencil against the piston top, turn the crank slowly till you find the point where it starts going down.

Make sure you distributor is pointed at number one, and both valves on number one are closed. See how your dots on the timing gears line up.
