Default Rear end ring and pinion install

Finally got around to the rear end and I ran into problems. The gears are in but don't allow clearance for the spider gear bolt. Speaking of those, one of the teeth is broken off. Where is a good/reasonable place to order some new spider gears?

An Internal gear set includes the 2 spider gears, 2 side gears, washers for each, and a new spider retaining pin. Should be anywhere from $100-160, ebay's prices upto to Randy's rack and pinion. Your choice on which one you feel comfortable with getting.

Replace all of the internal gears as a set, and make sure you inspect your carrier for cracks. You'll probably have to remove your ring gear to get the internal gears assembled.

completeoffroad.com has a notched cross pin. I have one in my truck. allows you to install or remove your axles with cross pin "captured" in place by the ring gear. I have read good and bad on them but, I couldn't bring myself to grinding a tooth off of my new gear set.

as said - on the higher numbered gear ratios, i think you have to either use the notched pin, or grind off the tip of one gear tooth.

Notched pins are bad news, grind the offending ring gear tooth. Even Randys R&P recommends this. If you only grind the part in the way of the cross-pin, you won't hurt anything, it's not in the contact pattern.

I have a 98 ram 4x4 and I want to put 4.56 gears in it. Does anyone know of anybody near Atlanta, GA that rebuilds rears? I have a 4 wheels parts store nearby but I am afraid their price will be insane. after they mounted 4 tires and charged me 175 dollars I am not sure they offer the best price around.

My understand is they are not exactly the best folks to have work on your truck either.....

Call around to some of the independent shops, see if you can find someone that has a clue. Dealership would be a good choice as well, but, you will pay significantly more there for labor.

call Alex at PORC and talk to him. I have no personal experience with his shop, but was impressed with his old operation in Athens, Ga. He's now located somewhere around Alpharetta or Cumming, so he likely has completely different mechanics. He's mostly a jeep shop, but I talked to him about the Dodge a few years ago and he said they could do gears no problem. He also advertises to be the lowest price on parts.

His website gets mixed reviews. I think it has to do with him not stocking parts, but drop shipping them direct from distributor or manufacturer.
