Go with a computer friendly RV cam.
Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers. (watch your lift numbers though, the stock heads won't go real far. best to do some research, and find the exact number where you start running into trouble, or, simply replace the springs/locks/keepers.... not a bad upgrade either.)
If your truck is 96 or later, go with a HemiFever tuner. MUCH better than stock tunes......
Poor man's throttle body mod. (DIY in the faq section)
Better heads? The factory heads are prone to cracking..... there are some low-buck alternatives out there in the world, that are better. (and come fully assembled, with better valve springs at that.....)
You wanna keep converter stall speed under 2100 RPM..... since you use it for towing.
Have you fixed the plenum yet?? I think you are in a perfect spot to do so, being as how the engine is disassembled??
Better flowing exhaust. Either long tube headers, or, shorties with a better y-pipe. The factory unit is restrictive as hell.
What size tires are you running, and what gears do you have?

Can't help with the cam price, but as far as the plenum goes it is a common failure, read the sticky on top of the threads https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...um-thread.html and if you change gears you do not have to do anything to the transfer case.
You should also get a build sheet for your truck. http://www.dodge.com/wccsapp/univers...ull&category=U
