Ok been looking for a good all around scan tool for awhile now. I had narrowed it down to a EQS3140 - INNOVA 3140 Pro Scan Tool - Can OBD 2&1 Kit.

Yes I have found it much cheaper than that but anyway then a guy at work shows up with this V Checker thing from China for 50 dollars on Ebay he tells me it will do everything the other will do. Live data, Display definition not just code, Reads plus clears CEL, Most new cars and CanBus. Well you get the picture but 50 dollars WTF ya I'm skeptical. So I start looking around find them and can't really find any bad reviews. So now to you guys has anyone used this thing?? Still doing research but I figured I would put this out to you guys in the meantime!!

Not surprisingly, the more expensive one is going to be more versatile..... However, you can accomplish the same thing with a laptop, a 50 dollar, or cheaper.... cable, and free software. Going that route would also give you infinite data logging abilities......

 

So do you happen to have a site for that free software and cable?

As far as I can tell you not only need a cable and software but you need an interface device as well. Something like this...

Here is a selection of cables. Make sure you get one that your software of choice will support. (some of them won't use a USB cable, have to have the DB9 feller.)

 

Been looking at a few scan tools to. Which one do you have and how do you like yours? Does yours support all the PID's for our trucks? Iam a little leary on the generic noname scan tools but some thoughts on the one your using would be great.

 

I have access to a Snap-On scanner.... (shop I used to work at.) Still trying to find a cheap laptop to install software on......

One of the joys of shareware/freeware is, if you don't like one particular app, you can download another one, and try it out.... Find one that does what you want it to, and is fairly easy to use....

The one I am looking at giving a shot is PCMScan.

 

FWIW, I picked up one of these for ~$50:

Autel (AULMS310) MaxiScan MS310 OBDII/EOBD Code Reader

Its a solid little device, does everything you mentioned, works great on all my vehicles, and is very easy to use.

 

Do you know what cable that requires?

 

I am pretty sure that flavor doesn't yet support USB cables, so, ya need the DB9 (serial port) type.

 

If your going laptop then dont cheap out on the software. Autoenginuity, Auterra are the two of the best. If your tuning with SCT/Stroker/SC/Turbo then Palmer Performance has good software for plotting Map tables.
