Default Banging noise(from driveshaft)

Okay, so occasionally while I'm driving my truck i hear this banging noise when i suddenly take my foot off the accelerator. It sounds like there might be to much play in the drive shaft or something, its only when i suddenly let off the gas, if I let of smoothly it doesn't make the noise.

Is this something these trucks just do or could there be serious problems.

Thanks for any help

my truck does the same exact thing, usually at low speeds like in first gear if i give it gas and let go to stop at a light i hear the clunk. Ive been meaning to write a post but ive been afraid it might be the tranny. Anyways im not sure why but hopefully we can both figure it out, maybe it is a problem with the dodges??

Drop the driveshaft, and check the U-joints. If those seem ok, (well, even if they are toast....) Pull the tailshaft off the t-case, its only three or four bolts... and check the snapring that holds the shaft in place. (should be right against the bearing you will see there.....) My guess is, it isn't there any more. There is an upgraded retainer, called "The Transfer Case Saver" (google it, you will find a source easily) that replaces that snap ring, and is a MUCH better design..... might take a few days to get one, so, just grab a snap ring from the dealer as a temporary fix.

That one shows for 98 and up......

I don't see where it even gives you a choice on part numbers...... the chart at the bottom of the page is for the seal, and bushing on the tailhousing, should you decide to replace those as well.

Note that is does NOT fit three-bolt tailhousings as well.

Best bet? Call 'em.
