I would just look on craigslist for a motor, you could find them for like $300+, look for low milage trucks with bad trans and offer them money for the motor.

Thats what we did when my bros 01 blew its motor in the mud.

First, There is no blue book price for a vehicle in POOR condition. That vehicle is in Poor condition. Blue book is only for Excellent, good and fair conditions.

Second, i have learned that blue book TRADE IN value is the better way to go. That way you know how much a dealership would pay for the vehicle if he were to tade it in. If you go 15% above the trade in value, then THAT is a fair price to shoot for. Anything more depends on how much you want the vehicle. Basically you are giving the guy incentive to not trade the vehicle in.

Knowing the trade in value is a good thing to know when buying a vehicle.

Blue book for my 2001, 5.9, 4x4 off road edition (42K miles) when I bought the truck in 2008 was $14K (That is not including the chrome rocksliders and chrome brushguard, and aftermarket rims and tires). I PAID 10K. It also had the factory extended warranty for another TWO YEARS. Only cost me an extra 50 bucks to put it in my name.

HOWEVER, that was my SECOND secondgen i have bought in my life. I overpaid on my 1996 5.2 4x4. When I bought it in 2004, it had 92K miles and I paid 9600 (It had a new tranny installed at 72K). I think I overpaid by about 1500 (at least). But it did last me 4 long years (traveled from OK, to NY, Back to OK, then to Cali).
