If it is a small base circle cam, I don't think the stock pushrods/rockers will be 'fine'..... Is your valve train loud? Ticks some at idle?

If it got worse and you are sure the engine is at tdc#1 and you got it exactly right, you might have gotten the fuel sync off more than it was.

Without a scanner setting fuel sync is difficult, if not downright impossible.

You can pay a dealership to do it, but their cost is about half of a decent scanner. I bought a snapon mt2500 for $220 on ebay, and it works great. Be sure to get one with the domestic cartridge that includes your model year, and a 13a key for the OBDII port, o if you choose to go that route.

If you can find one with the OBDII code cartridge, even better.

If the base circle is smaller and your rocker arms are not adjustable, then a smaller base circle is certainly not fine. even adjustable rocker arms need to have a pushrod in the right ballpark to get proper preload on the lifter. With too little preload, you won't get a steady vacuum signal to the map sensor and it will run rough as hell.

There Is no valve train noise It does not run rough and vaccum is at like 20 when idling and it holds there it seems like it's getting too much fuel or else not burning the fuel I have not put a pressure gauge on the rail but off idle if you give it a little gas is hesitates and coughs for a second then revs up. As I said before it also blows a little black smoke at WOT and you can smell it in the exhaust. As for the adjustable rockers I have a shaft mounted adjustable kit on order from Hughes it's just currently on back order I will be switching as soon as I get the kit but they told me with this cam the stock pushrods and rockers will be fine, not sure how but that's what Hughes told me I do understand what you mean with the diff base circle tho. Aim4, what exactly can I do with the tuner you were talking about I'm not really sure what fuel sync is sorry if that's a dumb question lol

Black smoke does indicate it is running rich.... but, at small throttle openings, it should still be in closed loop, and the O2 sensor should compensate. Should....

Fuel sync is a real possibility here..... everything else seems pretty good. If it can run rich, I don't think fuel pressure is the problem.

Fuel sync is when the injector fires fuel relative to the spark event happening.

If it's off, rough running is a strong possibility.

And its controlled by the distributor. (cam position sensor.) Unfortunately, the range allowed is VERY narrow...... setting it by hand is damn near impossible. Need a good scan tool.

There is a procedure in the service manual for base setting, I think..... Might try that, and see if it improves things any.
