Lightbulb Insulated Air Intake Tube.

Hey guys. I was thinking about all this $300 cold air intake talk and thought of my own slightly redneck idea to utilize our stock intakes. If I heat taped my whole exterior of the box/intake tube assembly do you guys think it would lower the intake air temperature? I think it could be successful but I need one of those fancy scan gauge tools or another way to measure the temp.

Even if we experience a 10 degree drop it would be beneficial to power and economy.

Everybody Please chime in with your ideas and opinions. Heat tape is a whole lot cheaper than a fancy intake assembly and if done well would not look too bad.

START BARKING BOYS!!!:icon_ idea:

The air charge temp isn't the only problem with the stock intake box.

It's too restrictive,
It creates turbulence at the point of entry.

Alright thats a good point that you brought up. What if a cold air intake was heat wrapped? I think someone should do an experiment. Maybe ill have to do it one of these days.

If the tube for the cai is open to fresh air, it really doesn't stay in the tube long enough to get heat soaked. I have a dual snorkel air hart to the front of the engine bay and the iat sensor is in the hat.

At 60mph, the temps are usually only 20* above outside air temps, I attribute that to minor heat soak and hot asphalt.

Already way ahead of you man. I used those insulated window things that lower indoor temps by 40+f, they are fireproof also. The tubing going to the air hat was scortching hot with it being right over the exhaust manifold and engine overall. After i put that insulation on i drove it around got it nice and hot, and then took the insulation off and felt the tubing. Its deff way cooler. Id say at least 30+f cooler, b4 it was hot, now it was just warm.

As far as improving HP i have no idea. I dont have a dyno i can just test it on everytime i change something. I also have no room really for a bigger air hat as the magnum's in the Jeep engine bay really leave no room between the hood. So i still need to change that. Gas mileage has actually gone down i think in the city. From around 13mpg to 12.5mpg. If gas mileage went down then that means I have more air coming in the engine and it is colder so my HP probably has increased by a good amount. Top end tho at 60-65mph my gas mileage increased by about 2mpg from 16-17mpg to 18-19mpg. This is a combined whole with the CAI and the insulation. I also add'd scoops from the grill so air blows directly to the filter as you can see in the 2nd picture.

I wish my gas mileage didnt go down tho in the city, im still wondering why it did after i add'd the spectre filter and removed the air box. But im pretty sure its because of all the mods i did which made the air going to the engine colder and free'er flowing, and more/colder air lowers gas mileage but increases power

Here isa pic of mine of my 5.9 Jeep
