Grinding noise except in 4wd yet 4wd doesn't work

Nevermind about the last post I get it now, so what constitutes a bad transfer case?

Cracked case, broken parts. The usual stuff.

If you can fix the snap ring issue, (if it is the issue....) pull the t-case fill plug first, then pull the drain plug. See what comes out. If you get a lot of metal shavings, you may have a problem..... if it looks ok, just refill it with ATF +4, fix the snap ring, and drive it. If it is still noisey, you may have to pull it, and find out why. Otherwise, just drive it.

I think maybe you should remove the front driveshaft to confirm whether or not it is the TC. Also check the front axle ujoints. Sometimes they will make noise when no load is applied like when in 4wd. Check the shaft joints while it out too.

Alright so this morning I jacked up the rear tires and ran it in 2wd (didn't have Jackstands and only two jacks) and the noise didn't come up, I drove the truck to work and the noise came on pulling out of the driveway. So I'm pretty sure it's not the transfer case but I'm not sure. Any other ideas before I jack the whole thing up? And I will drain the tc

Oh and does anyone see a reason not to drive it around in 4high if there is no noise?

May not be able to convince it to make the noise on jackstands, front driveline prolly has to be moving.

Also, keep in mind, even if it IS the t-case, it may not make the noise with no load on it...... You could try and repeat your test, and apply the brakes lightly while running it. Don't do it too much though, could overheat the drums.

Alright I'll do that, but I still don't understand why the noise would go away completely when I go into 4wd if anyone can kindly explain that

You need to check all the things that have been suggested. Without doing so, I really don't know how much more we can help. You need to start eliminating things and go from there. I suppose it's also entirely possible that you have a CAD vac problem and the collar is not disengaging completely when you put it in 2wd.

Alright I jacked it up and the noise is coming from the front axle hub. When I hand spin the wheels a clunking noise comes from in there. So any ideas before I have to drain the fluid and look in there (I just changed it with royal purple less than a month ago)

Check the CAD first, might not be disengaging as stated. And the ujoints, the sound might be resonating. Here's one way to check the CAD. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/..._engagment.htm And you need to check the front driveshaft.
