I'm not a fan of a one type fits all transmission fluid. I think it does a say it covers ATF+ 4, but I just don't trust that one fluid can be engineered to cover the different formulations all manufacturers recommend.

Go with ATF+ 4 , and you will be sure not to have problems due to fluids.

Alright thanks, and I changed my filter and tranny fluid about 3-4 months ago and since it is a new truck to me, I want to change it again. Is it smart to change the transmission bands myself?

You can adjust the bands. All you need is a torque wrench that is accurate at 72 inch pounds....... Do the procedure according to the service manual for your truck, and you should be golden.

walmart has 85w140 GL5 gear oil in a gallon jug for about $12. this is fine for front or rear and sure beats $5+ per quart for other brands.

if you have a Limited Slip in the rear add the little bottle of friction modifier, otherwise use as is.

Damn I put that over priced royal purple stuff in there for about $13 per quart. I wish I would have put the cheap stuff in there first to clean out the system since it's a used truck. And I didn't notice any difference using the high end stuff

Just finished. Didn't start as early as I wanted. Tranny took more than I thought, had to go get another quart. Took 5.5 qts. Diffs weren't that bad to do. That gear oil is thick stuph. Tranny fluid was still pretty good looking, a little darker than the new. Diff oil was pretty bad. And radiator fluid looked like it was new still. And it has never been changed.

Color is just a dye in these fluids. Unless the transfercase or tranny fluid is burned (brown or black) color doesnt mean anything, same for coolant color.

When i changed my transmission filter and fluid it took a good 6-7 quarts lol, i hope you used old clothing when changing the gear oil... that stuff the smell NEVER comes out and dont wash the cloths with others unless you want them all to smell machine included... just burn them or store em for use at a later time when your working on your truck.

Did you change the coolant fluid in the engine as well ? What i did was buy like 6 gallons of distilled water.. Drained the radiator flushed it with a water hose. Filled it up with dilstilled water. Ran the engine until the thermostat opend up so the old fluid in the engine mixed with the radiator. Then i drained it again and then put the new stuff in. Unless you take the coolant bolts off the block to drain all that coolant in there thats the only way to kinda get most of it out.

Na, I just changed the radiator fluid. Figured that was good enough, it was about 3 gallons. Didn't really get diff oil all over me. Used a pump to suck it out then refilled.

I plan in being more regular with the changing of fluids.

Sorry, but, that's not the correct way to change the diff fluid.
