Lightbulb better rear axle options

hey, new to the forum here... but I got a '97 Dodge Ram 1500 (regular cab 8 ft. bed) with the 3.9 V6 5 speed 2wd for a drivetrain. The axle is the Chrysler 9.25 with 3.55 ratio (very economical? NOT... & SLOW). the 9.25 locked up then broke something inside so im just looking for an axle to throw in without that much problems. I dont mind lowering the gear ratio since I already get terrible mpg (10-15 is very economical right? )
so what axle would have the least amount of problems to throw in and give me better power?

find a dana 60 at a local junk yard form a 2nd gen ram idk if the the width is diff between 4wd and 2wd though, its either gonna have 3.55 gears or 4.10 if its got the factory gears still, or just find another 9.25, both axles are EVERYWERE and cheap...

Welcome to DF

94-2001 91/4 is a bolt in, I would look for one with 3.92 in it. The dana 60 rear swap has been discussed here many times, All I will say is it's not a bolt in.
What size tires are you running?

im running almost stock (245/75/16). i'd like to go lower than 4.10 without too much hassle but how much trouble we talkin' goin to a Dana 60? for the time being, I can find the 3.92 9¼ for now but id like to go lower.

The only 9 1/4 rear with 4.10 was in the off road edition and that might not be to easy to find, other than that your swapping gears. Gears sets are cheap, set-up is not. As for the Dana 60 swap; that depends on whether you use the 3/4 ton leaf springs or not, either way cutting and welding is involved, most 3/4 ton springs are 3" wide half ton 2.5" wide, spring pads are in a differant spot on the 3/4 ton diff and so on......

^^^ Both have to match, Avoid the 91/4 factory lsd they have a bad habit of self destruction. In the front diff you will either need thick cut gears or a differant carrier. No 2nd gen truck came from the factory with a front lsd in it, so that will be after market part. Hope you have a deep wallet cuz this is not cheap to do. Front diff is a Dana 44
