Default Exhaust advice

Well I think I am going to finally redo my exhaust. I was just looking for some advice from anyone who lives in a state that has emissions. For example I live in Tennessee and our county has to go through emissions to get our tags or to renew. With my knowledge on exhaust systems being very limited I was trying to figure out the best bang for my buck with my truck still being emissions passable. Anyone have any recommendations on exhaust kits/systems?

Thanks

Since you're not in California, pretty much any cat-back system you might purchase should be just fine, as would be any application-specific catalytic converter. I'm running the Magnaflow direct fit cat which installs easily enough and doesn't warrant a second look from any inspector. Any street legal headers should be fine, too.

Now the important part: What do you actually do/wish to do with the truck? Do you want outrageously loud or reasonably quiet? Go fast at high RPM, or pull hard at low RPM? Towing? Economy?

Well I would prefer economy and low end torque. As the only things I really tow are my seadoos and boat. I would like it to have a nice medium/loud sound to it, but that is not really as important as the low end torque.

Thanks

Subscribed...I'm in the same boat since I hacked my exhaust right behind the cat when I did my tranny.

I have Flowmaster 40 series and it sounds loud, not outrageous, but you definitely know when in around.

People say flowmasters flow like crap, but I have ridiculous low end torque.

As far as emmisions, any legal catalytic converter would be fine. Magnaflow makes good high flow ones.

I have Flowmaster 40 dual outlet and it is loud and you hear it all the time.. really don't like it at 6:30 in the morning, winter going to work and I can hear it idling in the house and am sure the neighbors can too.. I have been reading good things about the Magnaflow 24inch single outlet kit.. Stainless steel construction and better flow and quiet...

So will there be any advantage at all to me replacing my stock cat? I figure if I put a better flow muffler on it the cat will still restrict the flow, correct?

You could just hollow it out, not my recommendation though. There are higher flow cats on the market that will compliment your choice of better mufflers.

He has emissions testing, and being able to pass without a cat (even though it looks like it is there, so, will pass visual...) passing the sniffer test is a crap shoot.

Magnaflow makes a high-flow direct fit cat for our trucks, that bolts to the existing manifolds, and will accept any cat back ya wanna put on it. The cat is the biggest restriction on these trucks, (actually, where the two pipes come together right at the front of the cat.....) and changing it out will give you a noticeable bump in power. (and make it a bit louder too....) They ain't precisely cheap though. Shop around, see what you can come up with.
