I don't know, I usually wait until it stops dripping. Or real slow intervals. When I can, I open it up the night before and let it drain all night. I also raise the rear a little(pan slopes back a little). You don't have to go to these extremes. I just try to get out as much as possible.

well a little update, driving to work this morning the truck had great oil pressure til it warmed up. then i couldnt get it to go past or even up to 40 psi. so there is definately something in the pan thats clogging it up i think. gonna go drain that oil now!

Dropping the pan really isn't that bad. With frequent breaks, (it was cold.....) I had my oil pumped swapped in under two hours.

Or (which I hope not) , you have bad crank bearings.

I'd just go ahead and drop the pan and clean it out along with the pick-up.

well im going to go with a melling hv oil pump, new pickup, new pump shaft, and a new oil pan and gasket as my oil pan is seeping oil out of a couple rust spots.

did the oil change and used a qt of rislone as zman recommended. oil pressure seems to have stabilized. hopefully with the new parts it will fix it. gotta tow my camper in about a week for columbus day weekend.

IMO, probably best to just replace everything while your already in there. Sounds like you got a good plan.
