Default Transmission question

Hey all

I have a ram 1500 4x4 offroad sport 5.9 with the 46re auto...

for the last few years I have been reading threads about peoples auto transmissions on df. Its not a secrete that these tranny's are prone to failure.

anyways, I was coasting to a stop when I saw traffic ahead on the highway the other day, and went by a large concrete wall on the driver side. the combination of coasting(exhaust quieter) and the large hard surface of the wall allowed me to hear a clicking tapping noise that I hadn't been aware of.

Later after I got home I put the rear axle on jack stands and put in in neutral so I could rotate the drive shaft to listen to my diff, U joints and transfer case only to discover that the clicking/tapping noise is being generated somewhere between the transmission and the transfer case. It just sounds like a metal on metal tap. not super loud but very obvious. and the shaft rotates without abnormal resistance (I think)

thats about all I know at this moment. I figure that it's probably on its way to being destroyed soon like everyone Else's.

anyone have a shot in the dark estimate of how long you think I have to save up a few grand to throw at it?

Thanks in advance

I suppose it would not hurt to remove the tail shaft and inspect the snap ring. http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...ase_saver.html

Easy there young buck. You had a response from MonteC...he is a transmission expert and has a shop that specializes in our transmissions. He is the only person that needs to respond.

Mine was doing the same thing. I heard it on the drive thru brick wall at dairy queen one night. Turned out to be in the overdrive. The snap ring that holds the o/d direct clutch pack. So its rebuilt now...I'm writing a diy on it now actually.

MonteC respond with a valid question in post #4, Because the 2gen is from 1994 to 2001. MonteC is one of the best transmission person I have seen posting. Since you have verify the sound that the transmision is making and I think you said you Isolate the area. Have you drop the pan yet and check for debris? Not everything in these transmission is a common problem. The only thing that is common on the 2001 truck and only on the 2001, to remove the transmission. You need to drop the exhaust.
