Default Fuel tank replacement question

I lost my fuel tank this morning. Fuel tank strap rusted through and tank dropped on the highway. Worst part was I had just ordered new straps yesterday cause I noticed they were looking rough last week. I have a 1500 shorbox ext cab with the 26 gal tank. Anyone know if there is enough room under there to put in one of the larger tanks? It appears the straps are the same so I would assume that the only difference is the length of the tank. Not sure if there would be enough room to do it safely. I do some long distance driving when I take it on vacation and could always use more tank capacity.

I'm pretty sure there's a DIY link in the DIY thread, I know I saw it somewhere

Found this thread on a 3rd gen. Looks like it might work. Looks like on a 3rd the connections are all the same. The longer part of the tank sits forward and the front strap is a little closer to the front.

Thanks Hydrashocker. If the additional size of the tank sits to the front I don't see where its going to be a problem.

So you have the 34 or the 35 gallon tank in your truck?

I want to find out the answer from hydrashocker before I say anything.

And don't go by anything(gas tank related) from the 3rd gen truck section. That's a different beast.

Yes, I have a 35 gal, we talked about this before.

Don't know about that one and whether those connections will line up?

Last I remembered, the large part of the tank is toward the front of the truck and the shorter long part of the tank goes to the rear of the truck. Thats the fill door is just in back of the truck doors. I guess I don't understand what is ment by the extra going toward the front? Mine sits all the way up to the cross member (the large end) then the shorter end goes down the frame to just in front of the next cross member. I could take a pic later if needed.

Well it is actually a 34 gal tank. Here is the number off my factory build sheet.

...........
you need the special short bed/extra cab
34 gallon tank that became available about year 1998
only on the V10 Ram

Subject: [DiRT] Ram 1500 26 gallon to 34 gallon conversion

Living in a rural area, I need all of the fuel tank range I can get. I've
been wanting to convert the fuel tank on my 2001 Ram short bed to the larger
34 gallon tank from the 2500 series for several years now.

I completed the swap today with the help of a dealer about an hour away. I've
personally gotten a lot of misinformation from owners and dealers alike as
to what parts are needed to make this switch work. Here's some information
for anyone wanting to do this:

The part number I used for the tank is for the ¾ ton of the same
year-52102241AD.

This tank is 8 gallons longer, but is the exact same depth as the 26 gallon
tank. So, no new sending unit or gauge assembly is needed. The old unit
swapped with no issues.

The mounting straps are the exact same for both tanks. Some pictures I
looked at on the web showed an additional bracing shelf was used across the
front of the tank. I found that the front end is very tight and does not
flex at all, so I chose not to add this shelf.

The old tank heat shield continues to be used. You don't have to purchase a
longer shield because the 34 gallon tank has some kind of attached heat
shield ( looks like tin foil).

I was told there was no computer reflash available for the onboard computer,
so I don't know how accurate the Distance to Empty will show. I'll find out
when I fill the tank up (yet to do).

I was initially quoted 3-4 hours labor for the swap, but the dealer got it
done in less than 2 hours. I don't know how much of this works on other year's
trucks. Overall, I'm very pleased. Hope this helps anyone considering doing
this.

So maybe its possible. It makes sense if Hydrashocker has a 34 gal tank. Still researching more before I jump in and buy a larger tank.
