Arrow All things electric

I decided to start a new thread on this electrical problem. It seems to go above just the basic ignition switch I thought it could be. I have spent most of my time today flipping through the repair manual that is in the DIY section. Now I have more of an idea on how the truck works.

Problem 1 - Power Distribution
It seems that there is three different main modules.. the PCM,ECM, and a Central Timer Module. (Body Control Module for this year Dodge?)
It looks like anything that is controlled by the CTM (Radio, Wipers, Turn signals, ect) is not shutting off when I shut off the truck. I also disconnected the electronic ignition module on the steering column and it changes nothing. When I turn off the truck the PCM & ECM shut down correctly. Im leaning toward the CTM being faulty or possible bad ground? Any other ideas?

Problem 2 - Radio ... could be connected? (premium sound system)
With the radio there seems to be more than one problem. With the problem discribed in #1 the relay for the amplifiers in the doors keeps clicking. I could be wrong but its a relay behind the 4x4 lever and when I unplug it I get no tweeters. Which leads me to another problem. I have searched and most applies to aftermarket radios. My door speakers do not work but the tweeters do. The tweeters are powered by the amplifiers on the doors correct?

Thanks Guys!!

First of all, Why did you "decide to start a new thread" ? All it will do is create confusion.

Second, A Dodge Ram only has a PCM or some websites like to call it ECM. They are one in the same.

Third, there is a CTM, Central Timer Module which does control the things you describe and more. But without sounding like a dick, I for one am not going to go searching for your original problem thread. Which is why you should not have started a new one to begin with.

I'm sure someone here(including me) would be more than happy to try and help you(even if I can't ), but come on there bud.

Well for one the other thread was titled Ignition Switch.. and described problems with what I thought was the ignition switch.. which its not.

Second the other thread got off topic... like this one is.. on the shifter position.. not the original thread of the ignition or power on.

Third, the original topic that I posted I commented on earlier and was on the first page and on the top of the threads for a while today with no responses.

Not to sound like a dick but yes you did kinda sound like a dick.. but if you have any real insight on what the real problem is I would like to hear it.

CTM only gets power from the ignition switch. Two sources..... one for start-run, the other is run-acc.

Turn on the radio, pull the connectors off the ignition switch, I bet everything turns off.

So we are both dicks! At least we agree on something. LOL

No response to a thread is not a reason to start a new one.

Staying with your original thread will get more answers than starting a new one.

And starting a new thread about the issues you had in the first one or two, will usually get "off topic" LOL Like this one has again.

Not to mention confusing. Maybe I'm just slow and need to work on one problem at a time, so don't screw me all up please.

Check the wiring in the column for burnt/shorted wires.

Also consider if it has an aftermarket radio with amp installed - did the person that installed it know what they were doing? If not, there is no telling what has been crosswired, cut, improperly spliced, etc. Eliminate the aftermarket items temporarily, then the electrical schematics sould help resolve the issue. Then have the stero and amp installed and wired correctly - by a trained installer preferrably. Can't count the number of botched installs I have seen.

I would again agree with stereo wiring being your fault. I for one have owned my 96 for over a decade and have had NUMEROUS stereo systems installed. Some way more screwed up then others. And I have had so many weird electrical problems that 90% come down to a stereo problem or a blown fuse. In your situation id check wires. CPTA is totally right too bad grounds can be killing you. Google DODGE RAM BIG 3 UPGRADE. Theres a reason you need good grounds, but we wont get into that.
