I've actually made one, was an expensive experiment, $50 of stainless plate, nylon washers/bolts, distilled and some KOH. It takes waaaaaay too long to produce even that much gas, maybe like 15min to semi-inflate a contractor trashbag.
Needless to say, home made is unstable and the only thing the damn cell is good for is to pump the hydrogen/oxygen mixture into a trashbag and send a flame through the tubes... it was a very loud bang and the cops were involved

Well, I guess this about sums all that up. Still think I'd be worth a shot to at least try out, I can piece a system together for about $50, which isn't much to test and see what happens. If anything, I prove it to not work and sell my system to some other idiot. And hell, if I do magically get an increase in gas milage, yeah me! VW will never believe it but hey, I guess the world needs doubters.

Got news for ya, if this actually WORKED, it would be everywhere by now. Some folks are making big money selling the PLANS for this....... that's all it is about. Lining someone else's pocket. Promise folks better gas mileage/more power/etc, and they will be lining up to hand over the cash. (doesn't matter that you can't deliver, folks will still spend the money on "hope".) Check Ebay for "chips" that connect with two wires, that supposedly give you better fuel economy, and 50+ horsepower. It's hilarious. And yes, people really are that gullible.

There's actually a shop right down the road from where I live that has a bright yellow sign that says Hydrogen fuel cells... thought about dropping by to see if they have proof of MPG gain, but then I remembered I really didnt care..
