Default MORE 46RE shifting issues

Mine is a 99 ram 1500 2WD 5.2L with the 46RE Trans. It just began the hanging up in 2nd and not wanting to shift in to 3rd. It seems ok when cold but gets MUCH worse when warm. It also doesn't want to shift back to 1st when coming to a stop unless I pull the selector into Low. Does the output speed sensor effect the shift points on this XM? If not what sensor could affect it? There are no codes. The truck has 115,000 miles on it. Bands have been adjusted per one of the messages on this forum. I know the rebuild is coming. Trying to get a little more out of it if I can.

Thanks

Did you find anything interesting in the pan when you had it down?

These tranny's also like to gunk up the governor pressure solenoid too...... but, I don't think that's your problem.... wouldn't hurt to check it. (just try and salvage the fluid.)

Welcome to DF.

Output speed sensor can affect shift points yea, when i replaced that on my mom 4.0 with the 42re (had a check engine light for it) the shift points dropped about 300 rpm.

If you have a 5.2 then you have a 44re transmission, the 5.9 has a 46re

That is the same symptom I was having when I got the truck. I attempted to adjust bands per the service manual only to discover that when I finally had the adjusting screw torqued properly then backed off, no improvement and only about 2 threads to hold jam nut on. Ended up being the direct clutch band anchor fell completely off, not allowing band to grab drum.

And I have pulled pan a couple of times. This is my first trans rebuild in 30+ years, and first one of thee. I capture fluid in gallon jug, straining trough automotive paint strainer so I can reuse fluid.

Default Still working on it...

I must admit that Automatic transmissions are my weak spot!!
I haven't had the pan down recently. I did have the fluid flushed about 20,000 miles ago. I guess pulling the pan would be a good idea. I assume that the governor is located under the pan.

I got the transmission type from the Dodge dealer by giving him the VIN number. I am not saying that they are always correct but just wanted to say where I got the info. Any other way to ID the xm?

All the solenoids are in the pan, im not sure which one is under the valve body. I have a fealing one of my shift solenoids are clogged as i get a shudder when it shifts from 3rd to OD, sometimes it goes away completetly on random days then comes back.. I just dont have the money to replace it atm. I bet that solenoid is the one where i need to remove th valve body too lol

Governor solenoid and Gov pressure switch will solve this prob temporarily . Had same prob with my 2000, replaced them(they were clogged). Didn't last for more than a month or two though. The TC and or the bands were shot. Which is what was causing the solenoid to get clogged.

Anyone have any tear down-rebuild material online? Looks like I will be needing it.

gdstock has a thread, as does rcky_mtn_ram. There is also a thread in the DIY section by J415, that has links to some VERY good resources.
