Default sloppy steering

My 2000 ram has sloppy steering. I put 17'' rims and 275/70/17 tires on it and it kind of wanders now. Does anyone know of a way to fix this problem? I drive to work at 3AM and don't need the cops tailing me thinking I am under the influence.

Did it do this before or after you put on larger wheels/tires? Are you sure the front end is in good shape? Ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel alignment, etc...

Oh, possibly dumb question, you did get the new wheels/tires balanced right?

Look in the FAQ/DIY section and try tightening the steering box. I've also heard a new steering shock can help when adding larger tire's.

When the stock wheels were on it was fine. I checked the front end and it is tight, and the wheels were balanced at the tire shop near my house. I don't have a wobble just it seems to wander. Extra steering stabilizer perhaps?

Well you could check out the link zman provided about tightening the steering box OR get a steering stock and see if that helps.

I'm curious to know the solution when you find one as I've got some Dodge factory 17" wheels to throw on in place of the 16". Wanna keep this in mind in case I have similar problem one day...

Have it realigned, and have caster angle set to 3 degrees.

you dont neccicarily have to get a second steerin stabalizer. you may be good with getting a new one, or a slightly larger diameter one. a dual set up doesnt really give the full benifet until you go to really large tires

A guy I work with told me about this web site www.dodgesteeringstabilizer.com it says it could fix my problem. anybody ever heard of it or tried it??
For now I will try the alignment first and see how that goes. I'll also tighten the steering box before I bring it to him.

Your truck should have come with a steering stabilizer from the factory. It's just a shock mounted sideways on the steering linkage somewhere. If the steering is sloppy, it isn't going to help. You need everything working as it should first.

Can't assume that the tires themselves aren't the problem. Are they new, or used? What brand and model? See if you can get them off the ground and rotate them; see if the have any wobble to them, or any bulges in the tread area that might indicate ply separation. You can get a bad anything, including a tire.

What size did you have on there before? Doesn't sound like you went a whole lot bigger; makes me suspect the tires, maybe even the wheels (less likely).
