Default tranny Problems

Ok the truck is 97 1500 5.9. Not sure what transmission I have.
Anyway first noticed problem on way home from roadtrip today, the truck wouldn't down shift after accelerating. Went from neutral back to drive and it shifted fine. when i got back to town it seemed sluggish to engage after stopping at lights. Check the fluid, and it smells off, almost burnt. level looked ok, maybe a little overfilled, but the fluid seemed really thin. Also the color was slightly off. Fluid and filter were replaced 30,000 miles ago. Any ideas on whats going on, and is it safe to drive until i get things fixed?

First thing I'd tell you to do is drop the pan/filter and see what's in the bottom of the pan.

Yep, and maybe pull the governor pressure solenoid, and give it a good cleaning. New filter wouldn't hurt either.

I'm not all that knowledgeable about Dodge transmissions, but I just wanted to check some terminology to make it easier for the guys here to figure out your problem.

You said "the truck wouldn't down shift after accelerating", and I'm wondering if you're really meaning "up shift"; shift back up to a higher gear, like after you're done accelerating in a lower gear. Or should we take it to mean "it wouldn't downshift when I mashed on the gas pedal".

Like a said, a little clarification would be helpful.

I'm wondering if maybe he accelerated a little then let off the throttle and gravity took over causing the truck to slow and downshift...

Sorry. Would not upshift. Accelerated to 75 and i was doing around 5k RPMS. wouldn't upshift. let up the throttle nothing. tapped the throttle a few times. still nothing

Do you think it is safe to drive until i can drop the pan and get this fixed?

Try replacing the Gov solenoid and Gov pressure switch. And adjust the bands(if you have a manual and feel comfy and have the right tools to do it).

How difficult is the band adjustment? if i recall we didn't do it last time i had the pan dropped. Also would the gov cause the burnt fluid? or is this more likely due to over filling?
