Default 2000 1500 transmission whines and slips

Let me give you so history real quick. I have a 2000 1500 ram with the 5.9L and the transmission has been sliping when I take turns and go up hills. It seems to do it more often when the truck is cold. I checked the fluid and it had plenty. A few days ago I was pulling a trailer and when to get on the interstate. I gave it a lot of gas to get up to speed quickly but the transmission hesitated and the motor reved to 5,000 rpm. The transmission then engaged and the truck accelerated ok. When I got home I heared a loud whining noise coming from the transmission. The truck ran ok for one more day with the noise and then the transmission quick. If I crank the truck up I can hear the whine noise and the transmission will work for a minute then the noise stops and the transmission stops. My question is what maybe wrong. I think it maybe the torque converter, but I welcome any suggestions. Also the transmission pan had a gray film all alround it.

I dropped the pan and the fluid was very dark. I found two little metal shavings in the bottom. The fluid in the bottom of the pan was gray and very thick. It created a film around the pan.

metal shavings, or, parts of a snap ring?

Pull the governor solenoid, and pressure sensor, and clean them up good. See if they are plugged.

You weren't towing in over drive were you?

Are you in neutral or in park when you check fluid? Have bands been adjusted?

Well all you can do is hope for the best, clean out the pan, pressure solenoid, buy a new filter and fill with fluid. Make sure you are checking the fluid in Neutral with the engine running. Go easy on it at first and let the new fluid break in.

I checked the fluid in neutral. No I have not adjusted the bands. Could they be the cause of the loud whining noise?

And before zman get's a chance to suggest it you might install a drain plug to make things easier for the next time you need to change fluid.
