Default cold air intake. Good? bad? what are u running

well I've been reading different posts on the forum about diy, homemade cold air intakes, K&N, AEM, MOPAR, and all sorts. I was wondering people opinions on CAI (cold air intakes). Are they worth is? I seem to think so and want to put on on my truck I'm justn ot so sure I want to spend alot and get a 300 plus dollar one when I can make a heat shield/ dust shield and can use a universal tube from the auto parts store and put a K&N on the end of it. Let me know what u guys think. Are they worht it? why or why not? which ones are u running. Also I know about CAI sucking in water and how high flow can allow more dust/dirt to pass through. I am going to put a sock on the end of mine if i get one to help that. well let me know.

CAI's are over rated on our trucks. the came from the factory with one(albeit a restrive one). speend that 300 on getting a new exhaust y-pipe installed. that will give you way more pep than a CAI. and if you alradey have addresed the y-pipe then get some good headers, you gotta breath out before you can worry about breathing in

I just posted a topic actucally asking about what type of set up i should run for exhaust rite on the main page. Feel free to click on that topic and post any advice on what type of set up i should run for exhaust. I 've been there done that with putting headers on my jeep wrangler and I can say I'm not trying to spend the money on go that route on the truck rite now.

I've thought about running a 14x3 air filter.

14x3 is like what most muscle cars have on them rite? the rounds open filter? probably would be better if you had a hood scoop

Hood scoop would not make a difference. You would need a pan to make it functional, and if it rained, then you are screwed.

It is all about what flows more air through your throttle body. Think of this: Sucking a filtered cigarette, or sucking a cigarette without a filter.

The stock box has a paper filter that has A LOT of resistance. A Cloth filter (K&N or Spectre) has a lit less resistance. Think about it. WHat is easier to breathe through, a piece of printer paper over your mouth, or a t-shirt?

I run the stock box with a K&N filter. The Stock box is actually a CAI. It takes air from the fender....THE SAME PLACE THAT so called "CAIs" take it from. The thing about them is that they have a greater surface area with LESS resistance that flows more air. BUT, if you don't have exhaust mods or if you have a stock throttle body, then it is not going to do much better than a stock box with a cloth filter.

The most power would be gained by running the throttle body BARE with no filter or box. However, you will let A LOT of dirt into your engine.

I was running the stock box with a K&N but decided i wanted to dress up the engine a little, polished caps, etc. i bought an offbrand polished CAI and a K&N filter (more surface area) helped out a little but I'm running a high flow cat and catback duals. the CAI actually emphasized the sound of the exhaust. Now ive been looking at a shaker hood (functional ram air) but it rains way to much here. ive seen alot of home made CAI on 2nd gen Durangos, not sure if it helps power wise but ANYTHING is an upgrade from the stock paper filter.
never got around to the caps though.

VELOCITY STACKS w/ a carb! theres a reason dirt trackers and landspeed bikes use them, and then rebuild between every race.

edit: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/3rd-gen...ity-stack.html
not sure how well it would work but most bikes have individual throttle bodies per cyl.

I found an off brand high flow intake on ebay for about $50. In my state, there are no smog inspections, so I cut the cat out & replaced it with straight pipe & added a flowmaster 40 muffler. I noticed a good bit of difference but I am saving up for the headers also. My total bill so far to increase the breathing was less than $150.00 thanks to ebay. I really must say the flowmaster has just the right pucker factor. What is that you ask? Ever drove through downtown and had a dweeb with his face planted in a smart phone walk out in front of you only to act annoyed that you honked at him, but still keep walking? After I installed the flowmaster, I blip the throttle & watch the dweebs *** cheeks pucker as he instantly steps back - priceless!
