98 Ram radio
Is it just the radio? Does it have a cd or tape player. Sorta related/unrelated the cd player (factory) on my father in law's old 02 f150 would get rather hot and wouldn't play cd's while it was hot.
The radio (AM/FM/cassette) in my '94 used to do the same thing, until it quit working altogether. No radio, and a tape will load OK, but won't play. It's getting power; it's just shot. A friend's '96 does the same thing. I'd just get a decent aftermarket stereo.
Shot in the dark, you think it's getting hot? If it does that fairly routine then I wouldn't think it would be grounding out.

Your truck simply kill's radio's.
It also might be worth while to replace the fuse, even if the current one looks good. Is there a fuse in the panel under the dash and in the power box under the hood?

When the radio cuts off, do you lose stations? There is normally 2 power feeds to radios. One is the power for receiver and output, and the second is for memory retention. Most likely a loose ground. I would suggest attaching another ground wire to radio chassis, and then to clean grouuding place behind dash and see if that clears it up. Cheap "fix" if it works, and if not, indicates it is a 12 v problem. AZt least it will narrow down the possibilities. I have seen so many threads discussing grounding issues on these trucks, just seems a good possibility.
Try and let us know. I'll dig into schematics a little. I would think a 98 and 99 should be pretty much the same.
