New Timing Chain Rusty
I got this new comp cams double roller timing set and it has been siiting because Im going to put it on when I do my plenum and ive been real busy lately, anyways I got it out of the box and it has rust spots all over. Is this an issue? What should I do to remove it or should I not put it in? I checked it when I first got it and it didnt have the spots so they happened since its been sitting. It was stored inside and in its box. Also the big gear doesnt have a " 0" mark on it to line up i guess its just because it has a keyway right? thanks everyone
There should be a dimple or mark on a tooth. Just clean off the chain good. I soaked mine in oil before I installed it so I didn't start it up dry. Rust should just be surface rust with no pitting, unless it has been sitting a very long time in a damp area.
also the small gear has a square a triangle and a circle and i understand the difference between those but i dint see anything on the big one but maybe its because the keyway only goes on one way huh?
heres a link, amazon was the cheapest at the time.

You can also use some steel wool to clean with brake or carb cleaner. Still soak chain in oil. Can't hurt it. It will take a little while for oil to get inside rollsers. Also, if the sprocket has no mark (check both sides) then I would suggest lining the marks up on then current timing set before removal. Install new set WITHOUT moving either the cam or crank.
the big gear has the word front printed on the front side and theres no notch or make anywhere on the front. also is it supposed to have the keyway or whatever or is it supposed to have the three or four holes like the pic in the link? hoping they sent the right one
Depending on who manufactured it, they will look different. I still suggest lining up timing marks on old set before removal and not moving crank or cam. Install with the marked gear in correct position and make a mark on the other gear. Other option would be to return as defective as timing mark is not on gear. I got mine form Mopar Performance. The timing mark on crank is there, but does not show up on photo. Some of them have multiple keyways cut for some reason.
