What degree should my electric fan turn on?
Depends on the t-stat. Turning it on before the t-stat opens isn't going to do you any good. FWIW I have mine set for 200º and off at 195º with a 180º t-stat, during the winter it doesn't really get hot enough to evaporate the condensation in the oil so that helps whenever I get to a sit and idle some place, I really just need to a get a 195º t-stat back in.
So after lots of research on multiple sites, I've found that the thermo (the ones that go in the radiator) are about $40 but vehicle specific ones are $12 but don't say the turn on turn off degree. I'm really confused about the steep price difference. Has anyone done this and can at least tell me how much they paid for a thermostatic fan switch? I'm really lost and confused and it seems the more I read the more confusing it gets. I'd like to do a relay controlled fan like this one http://faq.dakota-truck.net/HOWTO/vi...n_install.html it has very good diagrams, but I can't seem to find a good priced thermostat thing. Thanks again for the help.
If you are going the route of the electric fan like the 98 Jeeps with the 5.9 have then i can tell you based on what i've seen in my Jeep the fan kicks on right when the engine reachs 200f. I have the stock 195 tstat on mine, and the Jeep has 2 sensors, one for low speed when the engine reachs around 200f, and one for high speed when the engine reachs 210f or above.
I havent had my engine get above 200f.. When the fan kicks on the engine temp drops to 190-195f and stays there then the fan turns off.
You can use a ford taurus fan motor, i recently replaced the one on my Jeep because the old one finally was going bad. Lemme know if you want the part number and the part number for the wire harness.. I cant remember it off hand so i have to do some digging

I use the capilary type on my Jag. Like candymancan's it cuts on at 200 and off at 195. I have it out of the airflow to reduce annoying off-on-off cycle. At highway speed it usually comes on as I get up to speed, then turns off most of the time. No problems so far. Running 190 tstat. Haven't made this change on my Ram.....yet.
Ya I would like a p/n if it isn't too hard to find. What is a capillary type that you keep referencing too, I can't seem to find that either. Why does keeping it out of the airflow keep it from turning on and off because I'd like to keep mine from doing that too, thanks a lot guys. Sorry if my questions are elementary but I appreciate the help

I don't remember the cost as it was about 3 years ago when I added e fans to my Jag. But I went out and took these photos when I went home for lunch:

I now, someone will come back and say these are crap. But it has been working for 3 years with no problems. And I am verycaustious about engine temp - I blew the head on this puppy at 120 mph in the middle of the Painted Desert on I40 - at 10:00pm - on a Sunday night - in the actual "middle of nowhere!"
