1998 Dodge Ram Threw a Rod
I was driving down the road, and my transmission decided to stop shifting and the truck revved to 6k before it shifted, while later down the road the engine started to get a knock to it, and drove it a little further and i heard the rod go through and the engine die, shot the rod through the oil pan.. have had this truck for 2 weeks and a couple hundred miles.. Anyways its a v8 351 automatic, 4x4, and I'm guessing its gonna need a new transmission too, so how much would it be to put a new motor and transmission in.. planning on finding them both used and probably putting them in mself.. how much work will it be?
A Ford 351 is not the easiest thing to put in. PCM and all other electrical instrumentation will not work. Motor mounts will not work. Wiring harness will not work. Putting the same thing back in there would be the easiest and most prudent thing to do, with whatever mods, upgrades, and hardening you can afford to do.

Bought it private.. traded my 91 cummins for it.. Talked to him after it happened.. told me the motor was fine while he was driving it and the transmission got rebuilt 40k miles ago.. It sucks but what else can i do..
Unless you can prove he knew the engine was on its way out, you are screwed. First thing you need to do though, is find out how much a used engine is gonna run. If you can put it in yourself, you can save some serious coin. (probably around 600-800 bucks JUST for installation.....) Once you have a good engine in there, then, start trouble shooting the trans. If it was rebuilt 40K ago..... shouldn't be anything really major. (or, he is lying thru his teeth.....)
