Yea, trace the wires for damage as said. If they check out , replace it. And don't be unplugging and plugging in any sensors, without removing the Neg. battery cable first. You can also test the sensor, but that would require buying a Haynes manual and looking in the FAQ section for the service manual download that free.

I don't know; maybe someone else can say if it can be cleaned or not. No idea on the P1687

Fix one thing at a time. If the sensor is shorted, it can effect the PCM and give other codes.

No, and they will call the sensor something else. You sure the wires coming directly out of the plug are OK? They are at a serious angle.

EDIT, it will most likely be called an Air Charge sensor.

All it is is a thermistor. There is nothing to clean, its a brass probe that sticks out into the air in the plenum. There really isn't much to go wrong. You can take it out, and wipe it off, but, that's about it. (and I doubt it will help.) If you have a multimeter, test resistance across the terminals of the sensor.

Don't bother with cleaning, I don't know what parts stores you have around, but here is a link for a 2000 360. And it's NOT the ambient sensor.
