'99 Ram 1500 shut off and will not start
V7nf,
Saw your posting and wanted to get a little more info what you said “one more thing if you hold the gas peddle down will it start at all and run like **** then die if you release peddle ????idle air does this too.
About a week ago I was driving my 1999 Ram 1500 into work when I hear a buzz noise and then the truck started missing and running like s***. I made it back home and parked the truck. Thought it might electrical so I check all the electrical stuff (coil, pickup coil, cap, rotors, wires etc..). Everything looked good, but I still went ahead and replaced the coil and pickup coil…with not improvement. Was going to replace the crank sensor, but really don’t think it is electrical.
The truck has ~160K on it and I have never had any major problems with it. I have always done the schedule maintenance as required…oil changes etc..
I can start it but it is running real rough. I might try and put a vacuum gauge on it and see what I get. In your write-up you mentioned “idle air does this too”, are you referring to a possible manifold leak?
Any thoughts or comments would be welcomed.
Thanks

I have the same problem, I changed everything you guys mention on here. It still starts up and immediately shuts off. Could it be the oil? because it smells like gas. would that make the motor stall and not stay running? (maybe a sensor in the block) idn any suggestions?

Well, the person apparently searched as evident by the original thread date. I say....big kudos, moreover, stating they were having the same issues. Looks like a great place to post as opposed to having repeats imho.
StephanieMorningChild, welcome to the DodgeForum. It smells like gas b/c the PCM is making it run rich. That is pretty normal. After it warms up...it leans out.
One thing to check that fits your symptoms, at least what you've shared, is the IAC sensor. This is a sensor plugged into the backside of the throttle body.
Here's a pretty good looking video about it and other things.

No worries. I was making the suggestion since it would get more visibility as its own thread instead of buried in someone elses. I moved your post from the new member area to the tech section so these guys can get to working on it. Hope you get it figured out.
