Factory LSD

Factory LSD
What year did they start making rear LSD an option for the trucks? Im wanting to pick up a used unit when i install my gears and i noticed when i look for install kits it breaks from up to 2000, and lists from 2001 on. So i was thinking maybe 2001 was when it became an option since the install kit suggests that? If so if i were to get an LSD unit out of the 01-02 should it swap in just fine with using the 01-on gear install kit?

If you can find one dirt cheap, sure, it's better than the open differential. If you are spending more than a couple hundred on it though, there are much better alternatives, ranging from a lunchbox locker, that just replaces the spiders in your open diff, to "real" lockers. Have you sourced any parts yet??

What type of driving are you mostly targeting? If you are primarily road, then a LSD is more appropriate.
If you are looking at more full time locking, then yes consider the input from HeyYou and Stewie. However, how the thread got to actual "lockers" is over my head.
I was suggesting a better LSD, the Auburn, since you were asking about a LSD. The factory LSD is notorious for short life due to the clips breaking.

The trucks came with open differentials or Limited Slip. I have an open differential, i was inquiring about putting in a limited slip diff factory unit, out of truck that came from the factory with the LSD. This is my daily driver/pavement pounder/tow vehicle. With snowy and ice conditions in michigan i'm thinking a lunch box or true locker would not be the best choice. I was just wondering if a limited slip unit factory model would be worth while for $286 new or if i could find a cheap used one. I can see where the gear unit limited slips like the Auburn or Detroit would be solid units, but they are double the price. So the factory units with the clutch packs wear out that quickly, that i should just look past them?
