Default 5.9 46re to manual swap.

i have 2 questions that i just can't seem to find out through online searches.

one is: how long is the dodge 4x4 version of the nv3500? from the tip of the bellhousing to the transfer case mounting surface.

the second is: was the nv3500 the transmission used behind the 5.9 (gas) motor in dodge ram 1500's from the factory? every time i try to look it up i'm flooded with cummins motor results.

why i'm asking:
i have a 98 jeep wrangler. with a '99 dodge 5.9 in it with a 46re. and i hate autos. so i'm switching to a manual. so i have a jeep nv3550, with a dodge 3.9 ax-15 bellhousing on it. and i'm trying to figure out what clutch parts between the 3.9 and 5.9 are the same and which are different and how they are different. so finding out the length of the nv3500 will tell me if i need to worry about clutch engagement issues such as slave cylinder stroke length, or pressure plate depth changes. and finding out if that trans was behind the 5.9 from the factory will tell me if i need to order 5.9 parts or 5.2 parts.

anyway, that's all just me rambling. i really need to know the answers to the first 2 questions. thank you.

The only thing that should be different is the flywheel itself, the 5.9 is externally balanced, the 3.9 and 5.2 are internally balanced. The NV3500 never came behind the 5.9 AFAIK, but it will hold up just fine.

yeah i thought they all were the same too. (except the flywheel obviously)

but when i looked up the clutch parts they all had different part numbers. and the 5.9 1500 does have clutch parts listed for it. what did they put behind the 5.9's from the factory? as cheap as dodge is surely they didn't put a 4500 in a half ton truck... did they?

and yes, the 3550 should be more than strong enough. i'm pretty sure it's the strongest 23 spline output dodge compatible manual trans you can buy.

5.9 never had a stick behind it in a half ton. So all 5.2 clutch parts relate to an NV3500, and 5.9's are for the NV4500's in the HD trucks.

My light duty NV4500 behind my 5.9 v8 has a 23 spline output... I would think its a more heavy duty transmission... but that's not really relevant

i wasn't aware they made a 23 spline version of the 4500, i thought they were all 29. i honestly can't find anything related to any manual trans behind the gas 5.9. what's it out of? gas 2500's?

well son of a ******

i do a simple search for "light duty nv4500" and find out everything i wanted to know.

http://www.nv4500.com/newsdesk_info....newsdesk_id/32

apparently these 93-98 light duty gas versions of the nv4500 are about a grand less than their diesel, v10 or GM counterparts. oh well. at least this 3550 should be easy to sell. damn you internet for hiding your information.

I love mine! its really barely any "lighter duty" then the HD big brothers. you will enjoy the 5.61 first when 'jeepin'

The NV4500 may not fit in the Jeep, at least without a body lift or some massaging.

my jeep has already been bitten by a cutting torch a few times, another little nip here and there won't hurt it. i plan on building a custom trans mount cross member for it, so i should be able to get away without cutting anything but the tunnel over the shifter.

as for the length, it's only a couple inches longer than the nv3550, and my 46re is even longer than that. my wheelbase is also already extended. no worries, as soon as i can find one, it'll fit. i'm not worried.
