This site has them for the lowest rebuilt price i've seen. I'm saving my pennies.... Mine leaked out all its gear oil without telling me and ate itself.

I called and they said $1095 plus $220 round trip shipping (core return) to me in shreveport LA.

yeah i found them on ebay.

i was hoping to keep it at $1,000 or less. i found one in a salvage yard near atlanta, that's $850 ($650 plus shipping and core)to my door, but not being able to see it and, one, make sure it's the right transmission, and two, make sure it's not half broke, makes me afraid to buy it.

i'd rather pay more for one close that i can inspect first than deal with shipping one and not knowing what to expect. if at all possible.

i'll give them a call and see what they say about sending one to tampa without me having a core to send back.

$2,384... wow. just their core charge added $500. shifter, shifter plate, and bellhousing are all sold separately too. shipping was only $100.

thank you. pretty much the same story with them too though.

i've been working under a $1200 budget max, not including clutch parts.

looks like i either need to buy used or keep saving...

what's involved with swapping the parts to make a 2wd tranny a 4wd one?

main shaft, tail housing... and what else?

You would probably have to grab the parts manuals, and go thru and compare part numbers and such. So far as I know (and I have NO direct experience with this....) Tail housing, mainshaft, and perhaps a bearing or three. Might be some sensor differences on the older trucks as well.

nope, seems to be all the same really. just the mainshaft and tailshaft housing need to be changed. it's a butt load of work, but all the original parts can be used.

i think i found the one i want. it's localish.

it's a 2wd dodge unit from a 98 2500. for $800. with the shifter, bellhousing and clutch fork. i can get find a cast iron 4x4 tailshaft housing and 4x4 23 spl mainshaft for $100 each on ebay.

having the bh and shifter with it makes it seem like a good value. mileage is low too at only 100k.

i need to call the place in georgia again and see if their unit comes with the shifter and bh... if it does it's definitely worth it.

decisions decisions....

any input?
